As a part of the Bude Co-operative Trust we have opted to teach French to our Key Stage 2 pupils. Our aim is to lay good foundations for learning in key Stage 3. From Year 3 onwards (an informally in Year 2) pupils are taught basic vocabulary. We speak first and introduce reading and writing of words later. Pupils are given opportunities to ask and answer simple questions and to begin to use even very simple language for a range of purposes such as through songs, writing messages in cards, designing posters and writing simple descriptions. Our main aim is to foster confidence and the willingness to “have a go” in a different language which is often a stumbling block for us Brits!
