Welcome to Class 1 Spring term


We were very lucky to have some beautiful birds of prey visit us early this term. We learnt a huge amount about the winged wildlife around us.

Did you know that Barn Owls do not fly when it is raining because their feathers absorb the water?


We love learning coding during our computing lessons.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas break and had some fun and relaxing times. We are looking forward to a busy term ahead with a great variety of exciting learning planned.

Miss Archer will teach the class every Tuesday to Friday and Mrs. Zoeftig will teach every Monday and will also be running some booster sessions on a Tuesday. In addition, Jan and Jane will be working with some groups of children as well on a Thursday afternoon. Rosie is the class Teaching Assistant all week.

In Class 1 we have high expectations and encourage the children to be as independent as possible. We hope that you will support your children by helping them to be organised, e.g. by packing their own school bags, knowing when homework needs to be completed, bringing the correct equipment to school, etc. This is vital preparation for when they move on to secondary school.

Literacy; The class will focus on writing their explanation/persuasive speeches for the Youth Speaks Competition, which some of the children will be involved in.  They will also be writing their own 500 word story for the Radio Two challenge.  Also, a non-chronological report based on our geography topic will be a focus. Through all our writing, we will be working hard to improve our grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Maths; We will continue to develop children’s reasoning skills through number and calculation learning. Also, shape and space skills through a wide variety of different investigations, discussion, challenges, use of ICT and book work etc.

Science; Our topic this half term is Animals Including Humans and Properties and Materials, with lots of interesting investigations to carry out.  

Topic; The first half term will be geography/map work focus and also looking at some physical features.  After half term, the focus will be an Ancient Civilisation.

PE; We will be swimming on a Friday afternoon for all of the first half term and also the first Friday back after half term. The PE coaches will be focusing on badminton and tennis.

Art/DT; We will be doing some art work linked with our topic learning and we will also be designing and making an automata.

PSHE/Philosophy; We will be exploring how we cope with and manage our feelings, building resilience and who to speak to when things worry/upset us or if a friend confides in us.

Music; Learning how to make sound using stringed instruments.

ICT;  We will be exploring coding through robotics, ensuring we research online in an effective manner and continuing to deliver online safety lessons this term.



Homework reminder:

Please try to hear your child read and discuss with them what they are reading at least three times a week and record in the homework diaries which your child should bring to school every day. Please also sign their diary when they read independently.  Thank you to all of you who regularly hear your children read because your support and encouragement at home is vital and appreciated - we really do notice the positive impact it has on their comprehension skills.

Inspirational Journals are books for the children to follow their own learning through what interests and inspires them. We will discuss with the children how to get the most out of these books and they can explain in more detail to you! These should be brought into school on a Thursday to be shared with the class. Occasionally your child may be given a maths or literacy sheet to complete to help reinforce work covered in class. This can be done INSTEAD of their Inspirational Journal.

Spellings will be given on a Tuesday and tested on the following Tuesday.

Folens Maths should be completed at home and will be marked on a Friday. Please also practise times tables at home as these are essential for helping your child to be more confident at maths. There are many good online resources.
