Welcome to Class 2

We have a busy term ahead so please check on the website calendar to keep up to date with what we are doing.

Spring term letter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year and welcome to 2018!

This term in Science we are learning about rocks, focusing on some different types of igneous and sedimentary rocks and how they are formed. We then move on to solids, liquids and gases where we will learn about the water cycle and the behaviour of different materials when heated, cooled or at room temperature.

In Maths Miss Nesham is focusing on the number system and the use of all four operations. This will include learning of times tables for a weekly test which is covered in a separate letter. Mrs Ryan will focus on fractions, time telling and shape, space and statistics.

In Literacy Miss Nesham is focusing on grammar and story writing and Mrs Ryan on a range of genres related to her Geography topic which is the seven continents and five oceans of the world.

In RE Mrs Ryan is teaching about Christianity in Africa and then Easter.

In Art we are developing skills in paint mixing and creating washes then moving on to printing. In DT after half term we will focus on making things with moving parts which will have cross curricular links with Geography.

In ICT with Rosie we are learning to code and use algorithms including using Bee Bots which are programmable toys. We will also learn about Trust in online safety which will focus on trusted websites and giving out of personal information.

PE will be badminton on a Tuesday and swimming every Friday for 6 weeks and then dance on a Monday and tennis on a Thursday.

In French we are learning to say where we live, names of countries, asking and saying the time and days of the week.

In music we are very excited to have a grant from EMI to buy ukuleles. We have bought 16 and some of the class say they have one at home, which they can bring. Mrs Heard plans to teach ukulele this half term and recorder next so the children are getting two sets of lessons with tuned instruments.

Our school values this term are Responsibility/Courage and Forgiveness so these will be explored in PSHE lessons including thinking about how to stand up to bullying and making and maintaining friendships.

Please feel free to ask if you have any queries or any areas you can help with.

Yours sincerely,

The Class 2 Team

For the Spring term homework we would like Class 2 to focus on:

  • Reading every day - it makes a huge difference to every child's progress if you can read with them for 5- 10 minutes. By writing in their yellow reading log it helps us see how often they have read at home, what has gone well, or where they may need some more help.
  • Times tables - the children will have a multiplication table set to learn each week and we would appreciate it if you could help your child to learn these.

Thank you for your help and support with the children's homework.
